After the apology, Team Clinton regroups

Chief strategist Penn resigned after apologizing for meeting with the client that fired him after he apologized for meeting with it. Now Team Clinton faces roiled waters and perhaps doubts. So it needs to get into spin mode.

The refurbished Clinton team faced challenges on Monday on two critical fronts: trying to contain any fallout from union members and other blue-collar workers who are essential to her success, and seeking to persuade key supporters and donors that Mr. Penn’s removal could breathe new energy into the campaign.

Spinning already: this calamity could reenergize the campaign. Last Friday the candidate appeared in a talk show. Her comments are quite curious.

In front of a television audience of older women — her stalwart constituency — Ms. DeGeneres asked Mrs. Clinton about dropping out of the race. Smiling, Mrs. Clinton said it was all those years fighting off the “boys” that provided her with strength to resist calls by some Democratic leaders for her to end her candidacy.

It's sexism that's making them tell me to get out before the contest is over, she explains.

“You know, boys used to say that to me all the time,” Mrs. Clinton replied. “And I figured I know this contest is close. I don’t think either one of us should get out. We should let people vote. There are a lot of states that haven’t voted yet.”

No more suggesting Obama might be her VP choice. And then, a really fascinating choice of words.

... I just feel like I’m doing this for myself, obviously, because I believe so much in what our country can be again ..."

Doing it for herself. Interesting.
