No Es Canadá... Es El Estado De México

Not Canada, but Mexico State, is the caption to this photo that appeared today in El Universal.

Low temperatures recorded yesterday caused the boundary between the town of Saint Thomas Ajusco, in Tlalpan, and the municipality of Xatatlaco, in Mexico State, to be tinted white.

We're to land in Cancún in three weeks.

H&M: Weather to blame

A snippet on top of page B1 in todays's Wall Street Journal has this headline: H&M says weather caused poor sales. Say wha?

Worse-than-expected September sales at Swedish fashion retailer Hennes & Mauritz AB, which operates the cheap-and-chic H&M chain, shows increasing competitive pressure from two sides: even cheaper discount stores and mid-market retailers dropping prices.

Competition, price pressure.

H&M, the world's third-largest clothing retailer by sales after Gap Inc. and Inditex SA of Spain, said sales in stores open for at least a year fell 8% in September from the same month last year. Analysts had forecast a decline of only 7%.

As a reason for the poor performance, the company cited "the recession and unusually warm weather in September in most of H&M's markets," which limited shoppers' interest in the fake fur vests and knee-high boots of H&M's fall collection.

Naughty weather.

Red clouds

The threatening skies over Citi Field in the second inning could have been a sign that it was not going to be a good night for the Mets.

After work, I drove back to Queens, and stopped in the supermarket in the Cross Island shopping center to get bottles of seltzer (and bought two pairs of shoes in a newly-opened store). Around 6pm a huge dark cloud cover loomed overhead, and threatened a storm. Just before 6.30 the rain suddenly started, followed by a peal of thunder that boomed in tandem with a bolt of lightning. After dinner I went out for a walk with the dogs, around 8.30, and saw this sky: the color and the shape of the clouds were mesmerizing.

Hurricane Ike

Ike's moving deep into the Gulf, and Houston is under threat. Gov. Rick Perry today urged coastal residents in Hurricane Ike's path to evacuate immediately, describing it as a storm that could swamp houses in Galveston and other areas to at least their eaves. That's from a Houston Chronicle piece.

Its progress is something to behold.

Hurricane Ike batters Cuba

This piture is from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (how'z that for government bureacratese?), now referred to as NOAA. Look at that red blob, in the top picture, swirling back over western Cuba. As the hurricane moves west its swirls in a counter-clockwise pattern. In the second picture, look at the red line of hurricane-force winds. Haiti has been battered by the last three hurricanes; poor people.

Who said you could park there?

Strong winds pushed this Duth cargo ship onto the beach of Sables d'Olonne on the French Atlantic coast. What a sight to see when you go down to the shore for your morning constitutional.

"
The Dutch-registered cargo ship Artemis was blown onto a beach at the Atlantic coastal resort of Les Sables d'Olonne and an attempt would be made to refloat it later on Monday, [French maritime authorities] said, adding there was no danger to the environment."

Across, on the other side of Le Manche [English Channel], things were also tough. Witness
the waves that winds of over 130 kilometers an hour produced, pounding the UK shoreline.

Spring is almost here

We escaped the (forecast) snow yesterday, and can look forward to spring continuing to arrive. Here at my library, the impending snow was a topic of conversation - of course: the weather is a favorite topic for those with time on their hands (and even for those without, no?).
