Di nuovo - Again

Conservative leader Silvio Berlusconi appeared to clinch Italy's national election, making it likely that the media mogul will return as prime minister for a third time. Center-left leader Walter Veltroni conceded defeat, saying the result was clear even if the vote tally wasn't yet final.

This is amazing, yet typical of Italy. This is the country that has had 57 governments in the 60 years of the modern Republic. And it is the same country that has been considering a bridge from Calabria to Sicily for the past 143 years. And it is the world's 7th largest economy.

Of course the faces remain the same across time, so 57 governments doesn't mean that it has been ... wait, it does mean that continuity has been there, but so has been instability. Maybe it shows that government doesn't mean that much.

Of course, not everyone is happy. This man clearly isn't happy.
