Munich's Olympic survivor

Nearly 36 years have passed since Israeli fencing champion Dan Alon escaped down a squeaky wooden staircase as Palestinian terrorists took hostage and killed 11 athletes and coaches during the 1972 Munich Olympics. Yet even now, friends habitually cite the attack when introducing the 63-year-old father of three: "This is Dan Alon," they say. "He was in Munich."

The Olympic flag flies at half-mast during the memorial service at Munich's Olympic Stadium the day after terrorists killed 11 members of Israel's national team.

Dastardly act. Despicably cowardly.
