Palestinian rocket misfires, kills 2 girls

Gaza Palestinians followed the ending of a truce with Israel by hurling rocket fire into its arch-enemy. Israel has threatened an invasion if the shelling continues unabated. Aside from the rhetoric, real people get hurt, even die. This particular incident illustrates the folly of the violence.

A projectile fired by Palestinian militants fell short of its target in Israel on Friday, striking a house in northern Gaza and killing two schoolgirls.

Any violence is stupid, but this is really stupid. Not that these people should be firing rockets at all, but this is tragic.

None of Gaza's militant factions claimed responsibility for the deadly attack on the house in Beit Lahiya. Gaza Health Ministry official Dr. Moiaya Hassanain said the two victims, ages 5 and 12, were cousins. Three other children were wounded, he said.

They rush to take credit when the rockets hit Israel.

Israel left Gaza in 2005 after a 38-year occupation and has been reluctant to press ahead with a campaign likely to exact heavy casualties on both sides. Past incursions have not halted the barrages, and officials fear anything short of a reoccupation of Gaza would fail to achieve the desired results.

It is all so tragic and senseless.
